The Biggest Mistake People Make With Their Back Pain

Let’s settle this age-old debate…

Is it better to rest or move when your back is hurting?

I’m going to cut to the chase: if your doctor has ruled out a serious cause for your back pain, then you should AVOID bed rest! When your back hurts, lying down might seem like a good idea. I’ve been there, too, and when I’m feeling crappy all I want to do is lay down. HOWEVER, if you aren’t moving around, lying down can actually make your pain worse and make you more stiff. It’s much better to keep moving throughout your day, gently and carefully.

Here’s why…

The most common factors that increase your chance of getting back pain are the following:

Fitness Level

The less physically fit you are, the higher the chance is you’ll get back pain. If you have weak back and stomach muscles (your core), then your spine may not be supported properly. On the other hand, if you overdo it with your workouts, that also can lead to back pain.

Weight Gain

This can cause extra stress on the back.

Your Job

Jobs that require heavy lifting, twisting, pulling, pushing can injure the back. Desk jobs can also cause back pain because of poor posture.

Stress

Poor sleep, depression, and anxiety all increase our chance of getting back pain, too.

The first factor is the most important one here! Our bodies are meant to move and the same goes for when our backs hurt. Movement is the key to releasing tension and promoting the healing process.

So what CAN you do?

Start here:

  1. Go for an easy walk.

  2. Pick 2 stretches you remember from PE and do them (gently!) consistently on your living room floor.
